WHMIS Training Manitoba

WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training in Manitoba follows the national WHMIS 2015 standards but also incorporates specific provincial regulations under Manitoba’s Workplace Safety and Health Act. All workers in Manitoba who may be exposed to hazardous products are required to receive WHMIS training to ensure they understand how to safely handle, store, and dispose of these materials. The training includes learning about hazard classifications, product labels, pictograms, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). SAFE Work Manitoba, in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), offers a free WHMIS 2015 e-learning course to Manitoba workers, which serves as a general overview. However, employers are still required to provide additional, site-specific training tailored to the actual products and procedures used in their workplaces.

Employers in Manitoba have a legal duty to ensure WHMIS education is current and relevant, which means it must be reviewed regularly—particularly when new hazardous products are introduced or when work procedures change. Manitoba regulations emphasize that training is not a one-time requirement but an ongoing responsibility. Employers must ensure that all hazardous products in the workplace are properly labeled, that SDSs are readily accessible, and that workers understand how to respond in case of an emergency involving hazardous materials. This dual approach—general online training combined with workplace-specific instruction—helps create safer work environments across Manitoba by equipping workers with the knowledge they need to identify and manage chemical hazards effectively.
